Web Application Firewall (WAF)

What are WAF solutions?

A Web Application Firewall (WAF) is a security layer that protects web applications against cyberattacks carried out via HTTP/HTTPS traffic. The WAF analyzes every request directed at the application and automatically blocks attempts to exploit vulnerabilities as well as suspicious behavior before they reach the organization's infrastructure.

WAF solutions protect against threats such as SQL Injection and Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks, the exploitation of known vulnerabilities, malicious bots, and other threats targeting the application layer. This enables organizations to mitigate the risk of data breaches, application takeovers, and disruptions to online services.

Key features of WAF solutions

  • Protection against web application attacks – detection and blocking of attacks such as SQL Injection, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), Remote Code Execution, and other attempts to exploit application vulnerabilities.

  • OWASP Top 10-compliant protection – securing applications against the most common and critical threats identified by OWASP.

  • Application and API Protection – monitoring traffic directed at both web applications and APIs, which are increasingly becoming targets of cyberattacks.

  • Automatic threat detection and blocking – real-time analysis of HTTP/HTTPS requests and stopping malicious traffic before it reaches the protected application.

  • Bot Management – identifying and mitigating the activity of malicious bots responsible for, among other things, credential stuffing, scraping, automated login attempts, and the abuse of application resources.

  • Application traffic visibility and control – monitoring of traffic, events, and attack attempts, enabling IT and security teams to identify threats faster and adjust protection policies.

Why is a WAF a good solution?

Protection of internet-facing applications
Web applications, customer portals, sales systems, and login panels are constantly exposed to potential attacks. A WAF creates an additional layer of security between the user and the application, filtering traffic and blocking malicious requests before they reach the company's infrastructure.
Lower risk of vulnerability exploitation
Not every vulnerability can be remediated immediately upon detection. A WAF allows you to limit the risk of exploitation through appropriate security rules, giving IT teams time to test and safely deploy a patch without leaving the application unprotected.
Protection of data and business processes
A successful attack on an application can lead not only to data breaches but also to account takeovers, unauthorized transactions, or the disruption of online processes. A WAF helps mitigate the risk of such scenarios by protecting both data and critical application functions.
Greater service continuity
Application unavailability results in lost transactions, customer service issues, and operational downtime. A WAF helps mitigate traffic generated by attackers and automated tools, enhancing the resilience of web services against attempts to disrupt their operation.
Compliance and risk management support
A WAF is one of the technical components supporting the application and data protection required by security policies, industry standards, and regulations. It also facilitates event monitoring and the documentation of implemented protection mechanisms.

Cloud-based or on-premises WAF?

A WAF can operate within either an on-premises infrastructure or a cloud-based model. The choice of the right variant depends primarily on the IT environment architecture, data control requirements, available team resources, and the scale of the applications being protected.

An on-premises WAF is deployed directly within the organization's infrastructure. It offers a high degree of control over configuration, security policies, and traffic processing. However, it requires appropriate hardware resources and a dedicated team to handle maintenance, updates, and system development. Infrastructure capacity may also need to be increased as traffic grows.

A cloud-based WAF enables protection without the need to build or maintain dedicated WAF infrastructure. The solution can scale rapidly in response to traffic fluctuations, while the provider handles platform updates and development. The cloud model can also be integrated with additional mechanisms—such as CDN, DDoS protection, DNS services, and bot management—to create a comprehensive security layer for internet-facing applications.

There is no single model that suits every organization. An on-premises solution is ideal where maximum control over the environment is the priority, whereas a cloud WAF is particularly attractive to companies seeking rapid deployment, flexible scalability, and a reduced burden on their internal IT teams.

We implement WAF solutions from leading vendors.

We select and implement Web Application Firewall solutions from leading cybersecurity technology vendors, tailoring them to an organization’s architecture, scale, and security requirements. We support both cloud-based and on-premises WAF deployments—covering everything from environment analysis and technology selection to security policy configuration, as well as the launch and optimization of protection measures.

FAQs

Traditional firewalls and NGFWs primarily protect infrastructure and control network traffic. A WAF specializes in protecting web applications and APIs. It analyzes HTTP/HTTPS traffic and its parameters, enabling it to detect and block attacks aimed directly at the application, such as SQL injection, XSS, or exploit attempts.

Such solutions serve different roles and can complement each other. An NGFW does not replace specialized web application protection. A WAF focuses on the application layer and analyzes requests directed specifically at applications and APIs.

A WAF can protect, among other things, websites and web portals, e-commerce stores, customer service systems, SaaS platforms, login panels, and APIs. It is particularly important for services accessible via the public internet, which are constantly exposed to automated scanning and attack attempts.

A WAF helps detect and block threats such as SQL injection, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), directory traversal, HTTP anomalies, attempts to exploit known vulnerabilities, and certain automated application attacks. Depending on the chosen platform, protection may also include bot management, API protection, and mechanisms to mitigate application-layer DDoS attacks.

In many cases, there is no need to modify the code of the protected application. However, the deployment method depends on the chosen technology, the environment architecture, and the WAF model. Therefore, prior to deployment, we analyze the existing infrastructure and select the appropriate solution architecture.
